'Destiny 2' is changing up Gambit in a big way for the new season

TwitterFacebook

Season of the Drifter marks the next phase of Destiny 2's life, and the first chapter since developer Bungie's split with Activision in January. It brings a major new wrinkle to Gambit, the competitive-meets-cooperative mode that launched with Sept. 2018's Forsaken expansion, called Gambit Prime.

This eight and a half minute reveal runs through the new mode, as well as the various other additions and changes coming in Drifter — including a first peek at how the highest levels of Destiny play will evolve in the next season.

It's set to kick off on March 5 for anyone who has an Annual Pass for the year that started with Forsaken. Read more...

Amazon Prime members can now set a weekly delivery day

Amazon Prime members can now set a weekly delivery day

Instead of having another package arrive at your doorstep every single day, Amazon wants to cut down on cardboard and delivery trips by giving Prime members the ability to schedule what day all of their packages arrive. The new feature, called Amazon Day, will round up your week's worth of goods and bring them all on the same day every week. The idea is to make deliveries more predictable and less wasteful.

To use Amazon's new feature, look for the Amazon Day option at check out on your next purchase. Once it appears, you can select what day of the week you want all of your goods to arrive. Instead of shipping a product as soon as you check out, Amazon will stack up all of the orders that you want to be delivered on your designated day and bring them to your door in a single trip.

Your future orders will only be delivered on Amazon Day if you choose that option, otherwise, you can have packages shipped the normal way if you can't wait. You'll also typically have to wait at least two days from when you place your order for your goods to arrive, so don't try to game the system by setting your Amazon Day as Friday and then filling up your cart Thursday. Most good eligible for Prime two-day shipping will be eligible to ship on Amazon Day.

Amazon began testing this feature late last year on an invite-only basis but has now opened up the Amazon Day feature to all Prime members. The initiative appears to be part of Amazon's attempt to shrink its environmental impact. The company intends to make half of its deliveries carbon neutral by 2030.

Blackberry accuses Twitter of illegally using message technology in lawsuit

Blackberry accuses Twitter of illegally using message technology in lawsuit

TwitterFacebook

Blackberry will see Twitter in court.

On Wednesday, former mobile phone giant BlackBerry filed a lawsuit against Twitter accusing the social media company of patent infringement. BlackBerry claims that Twitter is illegally using mobile messaging technology that the company created.

In its lawsuit, BlackBerry refers to Twitter as “a relative latecomer to the mobile messaging world.” The company claims that Twitter “created mobile messaging applications that co-opt BlackBerry’s innovations, using a number of the innovative user interface and functionality enhancing features that made BlackBerry’s products such a critical and commercial success in the first place.”  Read more...

Phone-hacking device used by police sells on eBay for $100

Phone-hacking device used by police sells on eBay for $100

A phone-hacking device that law enforcement officials use to extract data from phones is popping up on eBay for as little as $100. Federal agencies in the US and elsewhere, including the FBI and Department of Homeland Security, typically spend up to $15,000 on current models of Cellebrite's Universal Forensic Extraction Device, though older versions are available on the secondary market.

It seems police forces have sold or otherwise disposed of some devices, which later made their way to the online auction house, according to Forbes. Worryingly, cybersecurity researcher Matthew Hickey bought several UFEDs from eBay and found details on what phones law enforcement officials searched (including specific device identifiers like IMEI numbers), when the devices were accessed and what kinds of data were obtained. While he did not delve further, he suspected he'd be able to obtain personal data including photos, contacts and messages.

Hickey found one of the devices was used to access Samsung, LG, ZTE and Motorola phones, while he was able to use it to crack old iPhones and iPods. It seems officials are selling older UFEDs that can't access phones running newer versions of iOS or Android. More recent models were able to access iPhones running iOS 11. UFEDs use vulnerabilities unknown to the likes of Apple or Google to access the phones. Cellebrite's devices become outdated as the vulnerabilities are patched.

Cellebrite has reportedly sent letters asking its customers to destroy UFEDs that are no longer useful or return them to be properly disposed of instead of selling the devices. Its terms don't permit clients to resell UFEDs.

This photo of Ocasio-Cortez, Pressley, and Tlaib from the Cohen hearing says it all

TwitterFacebook

Michael Cohen's public testimony before Congress took place on Wednesday, but everyone's still talking about one badass photo of Democratic representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib.

The testimony included everything from Cohen discussing racist comments he's heard President Trump make in private, to checks written to cover up an affair with Stormy Daniels, and the Trump Tower Russia deal.

At one point, Getty Photographer Chip Somodevilla captured this powerful image of the three representatives, which has been widely shared online. As the photos show, these three women did not come to play, and it wasn't long before people became obsessed with the powerful shot. Read more...

Ricoh's Theta Z1 shoots 360-degree RAW images for $999

Ricoh's Theta Z1 shoots 360-degree RAW images for $999

Ricoh has unveiled the Theta Z1, a 360-degree camera that offers near-professional features for a price. It's got a pair of backside-illuminated 1-inch sensors and variable apertures that let you shoot 23-megapixel images at f/2.1, f/3.5 and f/5.6. On top of that you can shoot RAW photos and 360-degree, 4K video. That makes it potentiallly very interesting for professional or semi-pro projects, especially as a "B" or secondary camera.

It looks much like the Theta V, but is more robust and has larger lenses. It also packs a small OLED display that gives battery life, connectivity and other information. It actually resembles Insta360's ONE X camera a fair bit, and may be a way for Ricoh to compete against that model with something a bit more upmarket.

The Theta Z1 automatically stitches images together like the Theta V, but ups the stakes in terms of image quality. To get the best out of RAW shooting, it includes a new plugin that lets you stitch together RAW images in Lightroom. It also packs new algorithms that supposedly improve noise reduction and low-light performance. 360-degree video, also autostitched, can be recorded in 4K at 30 fps with 360-degree spatial audio.

Ricoh is in tough against Insta360's ONE X, which can shoot 4K at a higher 50 fps, albeit with a smaller sensor and fixed f/2.0 aperture. The $399 ONE X is also a lot cheaper, and does a pretty cool trick: It lets you wield an optional selfie-stick, then automatically deletes it from the video. You can do that with the Ricoh Theta models too, but it's not as easy.

For pro or semi-pro shooters, the Theta Z1's multiple f/stops and a big sensor could make it a useful to accompany photo shoots. That way, you could give a client a cool 360-degree video on top of your photo or video shoot, and charge them for the privilege. Ricoh's Theta Z1 goes on sale next month for $999.

Nokia's crazy 5-camera phone comes to the U.S. on March 3

Nokia's crazy 5-camera phone comes to the U.S. on March 3

TwitterFacebook

At this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Nokia (now owned by HMD Global) has done something it hasn't done in a long time: It innovated.

The company's PureView 9 flagship is the first-ever phone to feature five rear cameras, and now it has a U.S. launch date: March 3.

Nokia PureView 9 uses its 5-camera array in a pretty novel way. All of the sensors have a 12-megapixel resolution and an f/1.8 aperture; two shoot in color and three in monochrome, and the resulting photos should have a huge dynamic range and tons of depth information, more than any other smartphone camera.  Read more...
