'Fortnite' gets a bullet-stopping 'Kingsman' umbrella

Epic's current Fortnite season is focused on secret agents, and that now includes direct references to movies -- if not the ones you're likely to think of first. An update to the battle royale shooter has introduced a Kingsman umbrella that, like the one in the Brits-save-the-world film series, deflects bullets when you open it toward your foe. You can't use it indefinitely (that would be wildly unfair), but it might just save your life if you're out of ammo or need some space between you and your opponent.

The rain-defeating device also works as a melee weapon and even a temporary glider. Just don't expect to pull off your best Mary Poppins impression -- you'll meet the ground much sooner than you would if you used your normal glider.

The same update also introduces an inflatable crash pad that can save you from taking fall damage if you need to make a dramatic leap.

It's unclear how long the umbrella and crash pad will last in Fortnite. While they last, though, they could have a significant impact on gameplay. If nothing else, it's good to see secret agent references in games that don't revolve around a spy who prefers his martinis shaken.

'Stay the f**k at home': Samuel L. Jackson reads you a sweary, poetic social distancing PSA

'Stay the f**k at home': Samuel L. Jackson reads you a sweary, poetic social distancing PSA

Almost a decade ago, Samuel L. Jackson's reading of bedtime poem "Go the Fuck to Sleep" captivated the internet. Now the actor has returned to spoken word, presenting author Adam Mansbach's timely new adaptation of the classic: "Stay the Fuck at Home."

"The 'rona is spreading, this shit is no joke — it's no time to work or roam," read Jackson, delivering the important PSA on a video call with Jimmy Kimmel. "The way you can fight it is simple, my friends: stay the fuck at home."

Jackson has taken his own advice and is social distancing in his own home with his wife and daughter. He also encouraged people to donate to Feeding America, a charity that works to relieve hunger in the U.S. Read more...

Stephen Colbert would like someone to TP his house for April Fools' Day

Stephen Colbert would like someone to TP his house for April Fools' Day

April Fools' Day is looming, but nobody is in the mood for jokes. Tolerance for tomfoolery is at an all-time low, as the coronavirus pandemic has people hoarding toilet paper and staying confined to their homes.

"At this point the only April Fools' joke I want is someone TP-ing my house, preferably in two-ply, quilted," quipped Late Show host Stephen Colbert, recording the show from his home. "I have a very sensitive backdoor."

Fortunately Americans' efforts at social distancing seem to be paying off, as early real-time data suggests coronavirus infection rates appear to be slowing.

"It's working!" said Colbert. "Just keep doing it America! And by 'it,' of course, I mean nothing." Read more...

Sophie Turner and Conan talk getting drunk at home for coronavirus

Sophie Turner and Conan talk getting drunk at home for coronavirus

Like many of us, Game of Thrones actor Sophie Turner is holed up at home due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, judging by Conan's video call with her on Tuesday, it seems social distancing suits the Queen in the North just fine.

"I see how people are finding it difficult, but I don't understand how people are really struggling to practice social distancing," confessed Turner. "I'm like, all you have to do is stay at home and get drunk at home. It's great."

Turner's husband Joe Jonas hasn't taken to the social distancing quite as well, though.

"It's like prison for him, but it's great for me," said Turner, who has been supporting his livestreamed DJ sessions by bringing him shots of tequila.  Read more...

'Apex Legends' tournaments get a new online-only schedule

'Apex Legends' tournaments get a new online-only schedule

Respawn and EA's dreams of establishing Apex Legends as an esports staple aren't going according to plan. The Apex Legends Global Series team is moving its events online "for the time being" due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and that means both more remote events overall as well as greater reward for those who participate. There are now three more Online Tournaments (#4, #5 and #6) due to start on April 18th, May 2nd and May 30th, while the already-scheduled Online Tournament #3 starting April 4th is now poised to offer $100,000 in prize money on top of series points. Its finals will broadcast on Twitch and YouTube on April 6th.

Accordingly, the PGL Bucharest Premier Event #2 slated for May 30th has been postponed to an unspecified date.

The shift is clearly necessary in light of the outbreak, but couldn't come at a worse time for the Apex scene. The Washington Post noted that server problems, badly managed practices (even the Tournament Mode had problems) and a lack of advertising had already led to dissatisfaction among pro teams. The move online, along with fresh competition from esports-friendly games like Call of Duty: Warzone and Valorant, might give Apex pros even fewer reasons to play. Respawn and EA may need to work particularly hard to keep the ALGS active even after the pandemic is over.

Larry David's annoyed social distancing PSA is the most Larry David thing ever

Larry David's annoyed social distancing PSA is the most Larry David thing ever

POV: Larry David yells at you for being an idiot who goes outside and possibly spreads coronavirus to old people like him, but not necessarily specifically him, because he wants nothing to do with you.

California is at the top of the social distancing PSA game, from former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's mini horse to this crotchety gem from the Curb Your Enthusiasm icon, via current governor Gavin Newsom's social channels.

"Go home! Watch TV! That's my advice to you," David says, gesticulating exasperatedly in the general direction of idiots who aren't staying home.

"You know, if you've seen my show, nothing good ever happens going out of the house, you know that. It's just trouble out there. It's not a good place to be." Read more...

What's on TV this week: 'The Matrix,' 'Sonic' and 'Star Wars'

This week March finally comes to an end and with the arrival of April, Netflix is adding some new licensed content to its catalog. Not that I don’t like the originals — as long as they keep making more Ozark, I’ll keep subscribing — but this week, being able to binge through The Matrix movies, all six seasons of Community and then watching Mortal Kombat a few dozen times will be nice.

If you prefer something new, accelerated theater-to-home schedules have Sonic the Hedgehog and Onward ready for viewing this week, while the Star Wars saga is available in 4K on disc. DC’s Harley Quinn series is back for season two, and Netflix also has a new season of its international hit Money Heist. Finally, The Walking Dead will wrap up its latest season on Sunday night. Meanwhile, ESPN2 is airing stuff from the X Games vault tonight, and of course the NBA’s 2K tournament kicks off this weekend, along with esports football and racing action.

Snapchat’s new lenses use AR to encourage social distancing

Snapchat’s new lenses use AR to encourage social distancing

Snapchat's latest set of lenses come with a timely reminder of the importance of social distancing. The app introduced two new lenses, created in collaboration with the World Health Organization, that use augmented reality to serve users with tips on how to stay healthy.

One, labeled "My Social Distance," encourages users to "practice social distancing" and creates an AR circle on the ground to help visualize the necessary space recommended by the WHO and other health organizations. Another lens comes with animated reminders about hand washing, staying at home and the importance of not touching your face. Both lenses link to the WHO's website with additional safety tips.

The new lenses build on previous coronavirus-related updates from the company such as new mental health resources and social distancing-friendly Bitmoji. And while the latest AR lenses may not be as technically impressive as what we've seen from Snap in the past, they show how the company is using its camera platform to deliver important health information to its users.

Marriott data breach exposes 5 million guests' information. Again.

Marriott International has announced a massive data breach that exposed over 5 million hotel guests' information. No, not that breach. It's a new one this time.

"At the end of February 2020, we identified that an unexpected amount of guest information may have been accessed using the login credentials of two employees at a franchise property," the international hotel chain wrote on Tuesday. "We believe this activity started in mid-January 2020."

According to Marriott International, the breach exposed information such as customers' personal and contact details, loyalty account information, airline loyalty programs, and room preferences. This included people's names, mailing addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and birthdays. Read more...

Atari's latest attempt at milking nostalgia is a 'Pong' RPG

Atari is trying themed hotels, retro consoles and other efforts to reel in nostalgic gamers, but its latest may be its oddest yet: turn Pong into a one-of-a-kind role-playing game. It's developing a Pong Quest game that has you guiding a heroic paddle through dungeons based on (what else?) Atari games like Asteroids and Centipede in a campaign to save Pong World. You'll fight in "RPG-esque" battles wielding customized Pong balls and adorning your paddle in clothing and other gear.

There will even be a four-player multiplayer mode that lets players carry customized Pong balls into online battles.

The title is due to reach PCs (via Steam), PS4, Switch and Xbox One sometime later this spring for $15. You likely won't get Final Fantasy or Skyrim levels of depth from a game like this, then. Instead, Atari appears to be counting on the sheer absurdity of the concept to rack up sales. At this price, it might work.

'Beauty and the Beast' parody stresses the importance of social distancing

'Beauty and the Beast' parody stresses the importance of social distancing

Belle's introduction in Beauty and the Beast now has a pandemic twist in a parody version that emphasizes just how fast the coronavirus can spread if people don't take precautions.

Much like the original, Belle starts off her day by greeting her fellow villagers also living dull, provincial lives. But in this version, Belle isn't the protagonist. Instead, she's the one who won't wash her hands, isn't self-quarantining, and won't keep the CDC-recommended six feet of space between herself and other villagers.

"I've yet to see a reckless fool quite like her," the villagers croon. "Without a mask or gloves she goes?...She's gonna get us all infected, that is Belle."  Read more...

Delayed 'Resident Evil: Resistance' beta goes live on PC and PS4

After technical issues forced Capcom to delay the Resident Evil: Resistance beta on PC and PlayStation 4, it's now available on those platforms in addition to Xbox One. You'll need to install an update to try it on PS4 and Steam.

You can check out the multiplayer game for free until April 3rd, after which you'll need to own the Resident Evil 3 remake to keep playing. When Capcom announced the latter, which it will release that same day, it said Resident Evil: Resistance would be bundled with its latest stab at reworking a core game from the survival horror series.

Resident Evil: Resistance borrows a page out of the Dead by Daylight playbook. It pits a quartet of survivors against a sole mastermind, who can set forth monsters and place traps to take out the four other players.

Forget Zoom: Use these private video-chatting tools, instead

Zoom is so last week — which, in the time of coronavirus, might as well be last year.

The videoconference tool that's captured the nation's attention as it socially distances and shelters in place has won legions of converts for its easy-to-use interface and fun backgrounds. It also happens to be a privacy nightmare. Thankfully, there are other options that cybersecurity and privacy experts say will get the job done — without the baggage.

And yes, Zoom has a lot of baggage. Let's start with the fact that the company has misrepresented the security of its videoconferencing serviceThe Intercept reported today that, despite telling users that "Zoom is using an end to end encrypted connection," the company does not in fact end-to-end encrypt calls on its platform.  Read more...

Bar trivia canceled because of coronavirus? This livestream will help you feel whole again.

As bars and restaurants around the country shuttered due to the coronavirus, the future of a popular trivia company was at risk.

But the people who spend hours crafting rounds of tricky questions, digging deep into their stockpiles of random knowledge, wouldn’t go down so easy.

After the Geeks Who Drink workforce — including roughly 1,500 part-time quiz masters and about 40 full-time staffers — was laid off across the country this month, former employees rallied together to turn their pub quiz experience into a Twitch livestream. So far they’ve run it for free twice, with the last one attracting 4,000 participants.  Read more...

Keeping children entertained and engaged during social distancing is quite the challenge. But it's important to make sure kids don't miss out on their childhood due to the new coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak

Last week Kim Kardashian asked her Instagram followers for fun suggestions for keeping North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm entertained – and on Monday she shared some of the ways she's been keeping them busy during a video chat with Jimmy Fallon.

'90s and '00s period dramas are the most soothing form of escapism I've ever known

Welcome to Cozy Week, where we'll curl up by the glow of our screens to celebrate all that's soft in entertainment. Pour yourself a cup of hot cocoa and sit by us as we coo over the cutest games, cry over the tenderest movie moments, and drift off to the most comforting shows. Because it can be a cold world out there, and we need something to keep us warm.

It all started with a video borrowed from my school library.

The year was 1999 and I had just started my first year at secondary school. Not that I'd have admitted it, but back then I was an awkward and rather uncool nerd who hadn't yet found a friendship group to gravitate towards. Drifting aimlessly and friendlessly, I did what any introverted bookworm did: I sought refuge in the library. There, the librarian put me to work and gave me odd jobs to do like putting books and videos back on their rightful shelves. One lunchtime, while putting back some returned videos, I spotted a dusty box set with the words Jane Eyre sprawled across its case in an old-timey font.  Read more...

Apple's iPhone 9 will likely launch in the next five days, report says

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, Apple certainly won't have any sort of physical launch event for the rumored iPhone 9. But there's pretty good indication that the phone is coming — and soon.

9to5Mac has received a photo from a tipster at Best Buy, showing a case for a "new iPhone 4.7-inch, 2020," which fits the description of the rumored new phone, which will probably be called either iPhone 9 or iPhone SE 2. The case won't go up for sale until April 5, which is six days away, making it probable that the new iPhone will launch in that period.

Given that previous rumors pegged the iPhone 9's launch at late March, it's actually quite possible that Apple will announce the phone today, with availability starting next Sunday.  Read more...

Google has discontinued the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL

Google is no longer selling its landmark Pixel 3 and 3 XL phones, the company confirmed with Android Police. If you enter the old Pixel 3 listing you'll get the home page instead and it no longer appears in the product carousel. Meanwhile, the carrier/configuration section shows the devices as "out of stock."

A Google spokesperson confirmed the changes with Android Police, saying its online store has sold out its entire inventory of Pixel 3 devices. The only phones you can find now are the 5.7-inch Pixel 4 for $799 and the $899 Pixel 4 XL.

The Pixel 3 and 3 XL were key phones for Google, introducing its new camera technology like Night Sight, Top Shot and Photobooth. Despite a few flaws, it produced the best smartphone photos around when it launched in 2017. While these devices have effectively been put out to pasture, users should still get Android updates for the foreseeable future.
