French Open slammed for 'hypocritical' response to Naomi Osaka's mental health concerns

Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open on Monday, citing her mental health. The French Tennis Federation (FFT) has now released a response to her unexpected withdrawal. It isn't great.

Last Wednesday Osaka announced she would not be doing any of the usual post-match press during the tournament in order to protect her mental wellbeing. Acknowledging that she would likely be fined for this decision, the current World No. 2 expressed a desire that the money would go toward a mental health charity.

"I've often felt that people have no regard for athletes [sic] mental health and this rings very true whenever I see a press conference or partake in one," Osaka wrote in a note she shared on Twitter. "I've watched many clips of athletes breaking down after a loss in a press room and I know you have as well. Tulsa Race Massacre: 5 free online resources to learn about the tragedy

If you haven't heard of the Tulsa Race Massacre or Black Wall Street, here's your chance to rectify that. 

Black Wall Street, also known as Greenwood, was once a thriving business district and community for Black people in Tulsa, Oklahoma, established in 1906. But on May 31, 1921 that all changed when a white mob set the community ablaze, which historians believe killed 300 people, leveled 35 city blocks, destroyed 191 businesses, and displaced around 10,000 Greenwood residents. 

Monday marks the massacre's 100th anniversary. Rumors and media reports that a Black 19-year-old, Dick Rowland, had assaulted a white 17-year-old, Sarah Page, in an elevator in Tulsa, Oklahoma sparked the massacreA conflicting Chicago Tribune report at the time noted Rowland had just tripped on Page as he entered the elevator. Rowland was arrested and authorities brought him to the city's courthouse, where white people threatened to lynch him. Black men gathered at the courthouse to try to protect Rowland. Someone shot a gun and, soon after, a group of white men marched into Greenwood with weapons and started a spate of violence, looting homes and lynching Black residents. Read more...

Hubble captures a luminous spiral galaxy looking all chill and relaxed

Swirling around in the Virgo constellation, the Hubble Space Telescope captured a look at the spiral galaxy NGC 5037, NASA shared on Friday.

Located roughly 150 million light-years away from Earth, the galaxy was first documented by astronomer and musical composer William Herschel in 1785. This new, incredibly detailed image of the galaxy is a composite of images taken with Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3.

The full image shows NGC 5037 encased in a wide, bold border of dark space.

After a blockbuster international opening for F9 just a week ago, the Memorial Day weekend box office in the United States has got to be happy news for Hollywood executives. The weekend's big winner is A Quiet Place Part II, which earned an estimated $48.4 million domestically, according to Comscore. 

Disney's Cruella is set to finish the weekend at number two, with an estimated $21.3 million. Both movies are in their opening weekends, and both opened wide in close to 4,000 theaters each. After the discovery of more than 215 Indigenous children's remains at a former residential school in Canada, a shoe exhibit urges people to pay homage to their memories.

An artist, Tamara Bell, told CTV News she grew up hearing about children who died in these schools, and the news made her think of her mother who attended a residential school.

This educational system is a dark and, until recently, hidden chapter in Canada's history. From about 1883 to 1996, Canadian authorities separated around 15,000 Indigenous children from their families, The Washington Post reported. How to turn off location history in Google Maps

Sometimes it feels a little creepy to open Google Maps and see a detailed list of the last few places I've been. I really wouldn't want that information to fall into the wrong hands. 

Google gets it, which is why the company introduced a simplified way to turn off location history from within Google Maps Timeline. The feature is now live for Android users and Google says it plans to eventually bring it to iOS users as well.
