French Open slammed for 'hypocritical' response to Naomi Osaka's mental health concerns

Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open on Monday, citing her mental health. The French Tennis Federation (FFT) has now released a response to her unexpected withdrawal. It isn't great.

Last Wednesday Osaka announced she would not be doing any of the usual post-match press during the tournament in order to protect her mental wellbeing. Acknowledging that she would likely be fined for this decision, the current World No. 2 expressed a desire that the money would go toward a mental health charity.

"I've often felt that people have no regard for athletes [sic] mental health and this rings very true whenever I see a press conference or partake in one," Osaka wrote in a note she shared on Twitter. "I've watched many clips of athletes breaking down after a loss in a press room and I know you have as well. I believe the whole situation is kicking a person while they're down and I don't understand the reasoning behind it." Read more...

This bag has lasted me nearly 20 years

How do you know if a bag is really going to stand the test of time? You don’t, and so you often have to take the maker’s claims of longevity at face value. This is why we felt it was important to take a look at a backpack that really has lasted beyond any reasonable expectation. Watch John Oliver beg for innovative cereals and trash the Cheerios Twitter account

Cereal is in a rut and John Oliver is coming to its rescue.

The host of Last Week Tonight took Memorial Day week off and went on YouTube to wax poetic on a topic he's especially passionate about: cereal.

"I'm aware that there's a lot going on in the world right now, but instead of focusing on any of that I'd like to raise a subject that is near and dear to my heart, and that is, there simply aren't enough cereals," Oliver stated in a fiery seven-minute video.

The host went on to voice his concerns about a lack of new cereals, exciting cereal-related news, and good cereal commercials in the past decade, though he did shout out one good Frosted Flakes commercial starring Shaquille O'Neal. Read more...

This company wants to make sex toys more accessible for people with disabilities

Sextech is bringing a much-needed cultural shift in how we view, talk about, and sell sex. Ushered in by a wave of women-led startups combining sex and technology to disrupt historically male-dominated sectors, this burgeoning multibillion-dollar industry champions inclusivity through innovative sex products created for and by more marginalized perspectives, bodies, and identities.

Yet while everything from high-tech sex toys to online sex education platforms are more inclusive than ever, a huge and diverse population remains excluded from this sextech revolution that's supposedly promoting pleasure for all: people with disabilities. Read more...

Tulsa Race Massacre: 5 free online resources to learn about the tragedy

If you haven't heard of the Tulsa Race Massacre or Black Wall Street, here's your chance to rectify that.

Black Wall Street, also known as Greenwood, was once a thriving business district and community for Black people in Tulsa, Oklahoma, established in 1906. But on May 31, 1921 that all changed when a white mob set the community ablaze, which historians believe killed 300 people, leveled 35 city blocks, destroyed 191 businesses, and displaced around 10,000 Greenwood residents

Monday marks the massacre's 100th anniversary. Rumors and media reports that a Black 19-year-old, Dick Rowland, had assaulted a white 17-year-old, Sarah Page, in an elevator in Tulsa, Oklahoma sparked the massacreA conflicting Chicago Tribune report at the time noted Rowland had just tripped on Page as he entered the elevator. Rowland was arrested and authorities brought him to the city's courthouse, where white people threatened to lynch him. Black men gathered at the courthouse to try to protect Rowland. Someone shot a gun and, soon after, a group of white men marched into Greenwood with weapons and started a spate of violence, looting homes and lynching Black residents. Read more...

'Friends: The Reunion': The One With The Irish Uncle Matt LeBlanc Meme

Iconic sitcom Friends had an undeniable impact on pop culture throughout its 10-year run, with memes such as "Smelly Cat" and "How you doin'?" circulating even before the internet was there to help them along. The show has now been off air for longer than it was on, and isn't quite as relevant to people in their 30s now. Yet Friends' reunion special still had one final meme to impart.

On Thursday, Friends: The Reunion reunited the sitcom's principal cast, with actors Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer gathering to reminisce about on-set accidents and inter-cast attractions on the show. It was all rather heartwarming, and interesting to see how everyone has changed since their days hanging out at Central Perk.  Read more...

Hubble captures a luminous spiral galaxy looking all chill and relaxed

Swirling around in the Virgo constellation, the Hubble Space Telescope captured a look at the spiral galaxy NGC 5037, NASA shared on Friday.

Located roughly 150 million light-years away from Earth, the galaxy was first documented by astronomer and musical composer William Herschel in 1785. This new, incredibly detailed image of the galaxy is a composite of images taken with Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3.

The full image shows NGC 5037 encased in a wide, bold border of dark space.

'Cruella' and the 'Quiet Place' sequel signal a hot start for the 2021 summer box office

Nature is healing, and so, apparently, is Hollywood.

After a blockbuster international opening for F9 just a week ago, the Memorial Day weekend box office in the United States has got to be happy news for Hollywood executives. The weekend's big winner is A Quiet Place Part II, which earned an estimated $48.4 million domestically, according to Comscore.

Disney's Cruella is set to finish the weekend at number two, with an estimated $21.3 million. Both movies are in their opening weekends, and both opened wide in close to 4,000 theaters each. Note, too, that these numbers just cover the Friday-to-Sunday three-day weekendQuiet Place should hit roughly $58.5 million after Monday tickets are factored in, and Cruella should go up to around $26.5 million, Read more...

Shoes force us to confront the legacy of abuse of Native Americans

After the discovery of more than 215 Indigenous children's remains at a former residential school in Canada, a shoe exhibit urges people to pay homage to their memories.

An artist, Tamara Bell, told CTV News she grew up hearing about children who died in these schools, and the news made her think of her mother who attended a residential school.

This educational system is a dark and, until recently, hidden chapter in Canada's history. From about 1883 to 1996, Canadian authorities separated around 15,000 Indigenous children from their families, The Washington Post reported. Students weren't allowed to speak Indigenous languages nor practice their families' traditions and were physically and sexually abused, according to Canada's 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission final reportRead more...

Sometimes it feels a little creepy to open Google Maps and see a detailed list of the last few places I've been. I really wouldn't want that information to fall into the wrong hands.

How whitewashed is TikTok? Let Kahlil Greene break it down for you.

Kahlil Greene, the 21-year-old TikTok creator elected Yale's first Black student body president in 2019, is adept at those skills, which he uses regularly to educate his more than 400,000 TikTok followers and 30,000-plus Instagram followers. Greene's TikTok is full of content that spans decades — from the Hidden History series, highlighting forgotten or unknown moments of Black American history, to History of Cultural Appropriation, focused on sharing historic moments of uncredited Black inspiration.

The "How Everything on this App Originated with Black People" series is on its fifth installment, with each racking up hundreds of thousands of views. The videos call out the hypocrisy of progressive creators utilizing Black culture as viral trends — from the "ice in my veins" pose, which originated with Black basketball players, to the now widely used phrase "sheesh," a sound of appreciation used in response to someone showing off, which has roots in luxury "drip culture" originally popularized by Black rappers. Greene begins each video with the blunt reminder that "Most of Gen-Z culture is just a whitewashed version of Black American culture." Read more...

6 helpful Google Calendar tips and tricks

The problem with analog calendars, if you're old enough to even remember those, is that they required you to look at them to work. Digital calendars may be better at reminding you to do things, but they still can't read your mind. Google Calendar, for instance, can only do what you tell it to do. The Google system may be good at integrating dates and activities from your other Google applications, but the calendar becomes much more intuitive after you give it some careful directions.

While you may think you have the Google Calendar basics down, there are a number of features that can help you schedule events and keep your calendars up-to-date in a more efficient manner. If you mostly access your Google Calendar via your phone, there's also a good chance you're missing out on a lot of Google Calendar features that can be accessed or activated in the desktop settings.
