BTS danced their feelings out in an adorably dorky game

BTS danced their feelings out in an adorably dorky game

K-pop phenomenon BTS has been absolutely dominating the charts, shattering records with their bubbly English-language hit "Dynamite." Yet behind their slick stage performances the Bangtan Boys are just a group of seven dorky, adorable goofballs — a side they got to show off in a game of Dance Your Feelings on The Tonight Show.

RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook joined Jimmy Fallon in attempting to convey various feelings and situations through dance, ranging from joy to surprise to "your jacket getting stuck in the car door." There was also quite a bit of screaming, with Jin unable to contain his feelings about "watching Netflix for 5 hours and getting a dead leg." Read more...

Twitter removed 130 Iran-linked accounts during last night's debate

Twitter removed 130 Iran-linked accounts during last night's debate

Twitter has removed 130 accounts that appeared to originate from Iran and were attempting to disrupt public conversation around the 2020 US Presidential debate. The social network’s Support account has revealed the deletion on the platform. It also posted sample tweets that show support for Trump and question whether moderator Chris Wallace truly is nonpartisan.

According to the announcement, Twitter found the accounts based on intel provided by the FBI. In a statement provided to CNET, the federal agency confirmed that it does share information with social networks but refused to discuss details about this specific deletion: “Although we cannot discuss the specific information provided, the FBI regularly shares information with social media companies so they can better protect their platforms. The FBI is actively engaged with our federal partners, election officials and the private sector to mitigate foreign threats to our nation's security and our elections.”

Twitter said the deleted accounts had very low engagement and didn’t make an impact on public conversation, because it was able to identify them quickly. It also shared full details about them with other social networks. The company promises to publish more information about the deleted accounts and their content after it’s done with its investigation.

This is far from the first time Twitter has removed Iran-linked accounts for election interference. Back in February 2019, it deleted over 2,600 accounts from Iran as part of its efforts to prevent foreign players from using its platform to influence the outcome of the US midterm elections.

'Like watching democracy get a lobotomy': Seth Meyers condemns 'embarrassing' Biden-Trump debate

'Like watching democracy get a lobotomy': Seth Meyers condemns 'embarrassing' Biden-Trump debate

The first presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden took place on Tuesday. It was, by common consensus, "a shitshow."

"Watching that debate was like hotboxing a Porta Potti with crystal meth in Phoenix in July," said Late Night host Seth Meyers on Wednesday. "It was like being hit on the head with a lead pipe in a room filled with nitrous oxide. It was like watching a two-person performance of 12 Angry Men where one actor played one part, and one was mad enough for the other 11."

The entire spectacle was 90 minutes of barely intelligible, unadulterated chaos, lowlights of which included Trump stumbling when asked to unequivocally denounce white supremacists. Read more...

Google's 'Hold for Me' Assistant feature appears first on new Pixel phones

Google's 'Hold for Me' Assistant feature appears first on new Pixel phones

When the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G arrive, they’ll include an early preview of Google’s new feature for the Phone app, the Duplex-powered “Hold for Me.” Mentioned during the Launch Night presentation and explained in a blog post, it lets Google Assistant wait around and wait for someone to pick up when a business is keeping you on hold.

It follows Call Screen and Verified Calls as new features that use Assistant to make phone calls less annoying, and repurposes the Duplex developments to let AI detect hold music and produce a notification once someone actually picks up. According to Google, you’ll see captions produced in real-time on your phone’s screen to let you know what’s happening, as Duplex can tell when it’s picking up a recorded message vs. a live representative.

Also worth noting, it doesn’t share the audio with Google or save it to your account unless you choose to have it shared for quality control. The audio processing is actually done on-device and not in the cloud, with recorded audio and transcripts deleted within 48 hours.

Facebook has removed more than 6,500 militia groups and pages

Facebook has removed more than 6,500 militia groups and pages

Facebook has removed more than 6,500 pages and groups associated with “militarized social movements,” since the company announced it would crack down on QAnon and militia movements on its platform last month.

Under the new rules, Facebook said it would take down accounts associated with QAnon, militia groups and other “offline anarchist groups” if they “discuss potential violence.” The company also said it would take steps to make these groups less visible in its apps.

Now, just over a month later, we have a better idea at how many takedowns have actually happened as a result of the policy. Brian Fishman, Director of Counterterrorism and Dangerous Organizations at Facebook, said the company had identified more than 300 organizations, and taken down thousands of pages and groups as a result of the updated rules. Fishman didn’t disclose exactly which groups the takedowns were associated with.

The policy came under scrutiny last month after Facebook failed to remove an event page that called for an armed response to protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, despite several users reporting it. Mark Zuckerberg later called it an “operational mistake.”

Fishman also detailed Facebook’s actions against the far-right extremist group Proud Boys, after the group got renewed attention following Donald Trump’s comments during the presidential debate. He said Facebook had seen “an uptick” in memes and other content related to the Proud Boys, but said “much of this content” was condemning the group and Trump’s remarks. Facebook banned the Proud Boys in 2018, and has recently taken down other accounts associated with it, Fishman said.

Cut his mic, don't kill the debates: What Trump's terrible night taught us

There is, so far as we know, only one moment in Donald Trump's long and privileged life in which he was actually made to shut up: the mashed potato incident.

When Trump was 7, his elder brother Fred dumped a warm bowl of mash on Donald's head at the dinner table "because he was being such a brat" towards their younger siblings and wouldn't listen to his mother, according to Mary Trump's family tell-all Too Much and Never Enough. "Everybody laughed, and they couldn't stop laughing," she wrote. "It was the first time Donald had been humiliated ... from then on, he would never allow himself to feel that feeling again." The incident still stings: Trump glowered at the family when they brought it up during a White House lunch in 2017, Mary wrote.      Read more...

NBA and NFL players allegedly targeted in social media phishing scam

Two men were charged by the U.S. Department of Justice for allegedly hacking the social media accounts of NBA and NFL players.

Both men, Ronnie Magrehbi, 20, of Florida, and Trevontae Washington, 21, of Louisiana, face a hefty fine along with time in prison.

According to a statement by the DOJ, between December 2017 and April 2019, they targeted the social media accounts of professional athletes in the NFL and NBA via phishing campaigns.

Washington would create fake login pages for social networking sites and then message the athletes on those platforms. When a player clicked the link, they were greeted with what looked like a login page for a social network. When an athlete entered their information, that sensitive information was sent to Washington. Read more...

Twitter will add voice tweet transcriptions following criticism over accessibility

Twitter will add voice tweet transcriptions following criticism over accessibility

When Twitter introduced voice tweets earlier this summer as a way to send more personalized messages, it caught a lot of flack for not including accessibility features. Now, the company said it will add transcriptions for voice tweets as part of an initiative to promote accessibility within its products. It’s also expanding the voice tweet feature, which is still only available on iOS, effective immediately.

After voice tweets arrived in a testing phase, critics pointed out that it should have had captions from the get-go as required by Federal law. Twitter then surprisingly admitted that it didn’t have a dedicated accessibility team, but instead relied on employees to donate additional time to work on those features. Since then, the company has launched two separate teams dedicated to accessibility, including one for its products.

In a post on September 2nd, Twitter said that it would add automated captions to audio and video by “early 2021.” However, it hasn’t specified yet when transcripts will appear for voice tweets. While the feature has now expanded to more iOS users, it’s still in limited testing and Twitter has said that it won’t come to Android or the web until next year.

Ford makes the 2021 Mustang Mach-E a little cheaper

Ford makes the 2021 Mustang Mach-E a little cheaper

Ford is hoping to take the edge off some of the sticker shock when you buy a new Mustang Mach-E. Autoblog is reporting on a leaked memo, published on the Mach-E Forum, that purports to have been sent to Ford dealerships in the US. The instructions from HQ say that the electric crossover’s price needs to drop from between $1,000 and $3,000, depending on the model.

The entry-level Select and First Edition models both get $1,000 shorn from their price, while the CA Route 1 gets $2,000 knocked off. If you’re opting for the Premium versions, either in all-wheel or rear-wheel drive, then you’ll get $3,000 off the sticker price, before incentives and extras and all that yadda.

Autoblog speculates that the move is designed to head-off concerns that the Mach-E is overpriced compared to Volkswagen’s forthcoming ID.4. That $40,000-or-so price band is going to be an ever more competitive one for EVs, especially as more manufacturers get their houses in order.

Mark Hamill drops the mic on the Biden-Trump debate with a tweet about 'Star Wars'

Well, that was an exhausting 90 minutes.

The first Biden-Trump debate was basically a total mess, full of interruptions (Trump), Jim Halpert-style stares into the camera (Biden), and refusals to denounce white supremacy (Trump, obviously).

Everyone pretty much agreed that the whole thing was a total disaster, and Mark Hamill was no exception.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, everyone's favourite Jedi Master took to Twitter to make his feelings clear.

That debate was the worst thing I've ever seen & I was in The Star Wars Holiday Special.

Lenovo’s new laptop has a unique way of storing your earbuds

In the age of near-constant video calls (so many!), being on the move and forgetting your headphones can be a pretty big nuisance.

Lenovo has a pretty elegant solution (via TechRadar), which we haven't seen on a laptop before. The company's new ThinkBook 15 Gen 2 i has integrated Bluetooth wireless earbuds.

When I say integrated I mean it: The earbuds are literally stored within the laptop. Even better, they charge when they're stored, and Lenovo says they will automatically connect to the laptop audio when taken out. Other features include dual mics and environmental noise cancellation, as well as muting/unmuting with a double tap on the earbuds.  Read more...

The FCC's new anti-robocall rules prevent surprise charges for consumers

The FCC's new anti-robocall rules prevent surprise charges for consumers

Back in March, the FCC ordered all carriers and phone companies to adopt the STIR/SHAKEN protocol by June 30th, 2021 as an effort to combat robocalls. Now, the commission has announced new rules to clarify carriers’ obligations regarding the technology’s implementation. One of those new rules, for instance, protects consumers from surprise charges. To be precise, it prohibits voice service providers from adding line-item charges to their bills for caller ID authentication.

The FCC is also requiring providers to upgrade their networks if they currently can’t implement STIR/SHAKEN, which is an Internet Protocol standard for IP-based networks. Otherwise, they’ll have to develop a non-IP caller ID verification solution. That said, the FCC will give small voice providers that can’t adopt the technology yet “limited extensions,” so long as they implement robocall mitigation programs.

Americans have been getting inundated with robocalls for years, and the issue has only been getting worse. According to YouMail, which provides a service that can block those calls, people in the US received 58.5 billion robocalls in 2019. That’s 22 percent more than 2018’s. The STIR/SHAKEN protocol gives carriers a way to verify that a call is legitimate before it even reaches the recipient. It can help reduce the effectiveness of illegal spoofing, which is a technique commonly used by robocallers to fool consumers into thinking they’re taking calls from a government agency or from someone in their area.

Google Meet's 60-minute limit on free calls won't kick in until 2021

Google expanded Meet’s availability earlier this year to give more people access to the video chat service in the midst of coronavirus-related lockdowns. The tech giant didn’t just make it available to everyone with a Gmail account, though, it also made its premium features accessible at no cost until September 30th. One of those premium features is the ability to make unlimited calls, without which users would have to deal with a 60-minute limit per call. The good news is that free Gmail users won’t have to worry about call limits tomorrow or anytime soon: the tech giant has extended their access to unlimited Meet calls until March 31st, 2021.

In a post announcing the extension, Meet Group Product Manager Samir Pradhan said Google wants to “continue helping those who rely on Meet to stay in touch” over the holiday season, especially since not everyone can travel to be with their families and friends. The post also talks about Meet’s recent feature additions, including the ability to cast Meet calls on TV, to join calls hands-free on the Nest Hub Max and to blur backgrounds. More recently, Google has also rolled out noise cancellation for Meet on Android and iOS to filter out background sounds for those who prefer taking video calls on their mobile devices.

Trump refused to condemn white supremacists. The debate didn't get any better from there.

On Tuesday night in Ohio, Donald Trump told white supremacists to “stand by.”

Then he told his followers to “go into the polls and watch carefully.”

There was a lot of noise in the first presidential debate of 2020. Trump lied. He was rude. Three old men yelled over each other. But if you're going to remember anything from this disaster, it's that the president of the United States refused to condemn white supremacy, and that he encouraged his followers to intimidate voters at the polls.

Chris Wallace: "Are you willing, tonight, to condemn white supremacists and militia groups and to say that they need to stand down..."

Trump: "Proud Boys, stand back and stand by! But I'll tell you what, somebody's got to do something about antifa and the left." pic.twitter.com/4vrPocKzcu

Everyone agrees the first Trump vs. Biden debate was a total disaster

The first 2020 presidential debate was a disaster. A shouty, incomprehensible, undercooked turducken stitched from the carcasses of a debate and a drunken Thanksgiving argument and a phone video of a racist shouting slurs on a bus.

Moderator Chris Wallace spent several full minutes over the course of the 90-minute event literally begging President Trump to stop interrupting and talking over opponent Joe Biden as well as over Wallace himself, reminding him at one point of the terms his own campaign agreed on. An exasperated Biden at one point literally asked the president "Will you just shut up, man?" and later told him to "shush".  Read more...

Joe Biden spent the first debate staring into the camera like Jim Halpert

Look out, Jim. There's a new reaction guy in town, and his name's Joe.

The company’s status page notes an outage that’s affecting many of its connected services that bring music, video and pictures to you. Apple TV+, Apple Music, Photos and more are either running slowly or not at all for many people. Some are unaffected, but Apple confirmed the issue and said it’s investigating.
