Amazon's Ring worked with more cops than ever before in 2020

While the rest of us spent 2020 trying to reckon with the atrocities of police brutality and racism embedded into the American justice system, Amazon's Ring spent it doubling down on its effort to cozy up to more cops.

More than 1,189 local police and fire departments joined Ring's Neighbors Portal program in 2020 alone, according to a report from Amazon found by the Financial Times, giving a grand total of 2,014 government agencies access to one of the biggest private surveillance networks in the country.

The number of departments added last year was more than double the 703 brought on board in 2019, and an even bigger increase from the 40 back in 2018. The participating agencies now span across almost the whole of the United States, with the exclusion of only Wyoming and Montana. Read more...

Elon Musk's explosive SpaceX rocket test reportedly violated its FAA license

Back in December 2020, SpaceX staged a test in which it launched a rocket that's meant to one day bring us closer to Mars than ever before. Then, on its way back down to earth, it exploded.

When it comes to ambitious test flights like that of the 16-story-tall SN8 Starship, "success" is relative. Even after the prototype exploded, SpaceX deemed the record-setting height the rocket ascended to a triumph, with CEO Elon Musk tweeting out a celebratory, "Mars, here we come!!"

But it seems not everyone was as enthused about the Starship's blaze of glory.

Mars, here we come!!

Chromebook demand more than doubled in 2020 due to the pandemic

Chromebook demand more than doubled in 2020 due to the pandemic

It’s no secret that Chromebook demand surged in 2020 as people were forced to work and learn from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s now clear just how much demand there really was. According to 9to5Google, Canalys estimated that Chromebook shipments more than doubled in 2020 from 14.7 million laptops to 30.7 million. For some PC makers, the jump was huge — Samsung’s shipments more than quadrupled (albeit to a still-modest 1.9 million), while Lenovo’s made a similar leap to 6.8 million.

Growth skyrocketed in the last quarter of 2020. Outside of Acer, whose shipments ‘only’ grew 76 percent, the increases were dramatic — Lenovo saw its Chromebook numbers jump a staggering 1,766 percent.

The spike in demand was a matter of necessity, Canalys said. With the second COVID-19 wave prompting new lockdowns and more remote education, schools and students often didn’t have much choice but to issue or require laptops. Chromebooks are both inexpensive and relatively easy to maintain, making them easier choices than conventional laptops for many schools and some businesses.

Tablets also enjoyed a spike in demand, if not nearly as large. Shipments grew a brisk 28 percent in 2020, with Apple, Samsung and Lenovo seeing some of the largest demand. Here, the explanation is more complicated. While education and work played large roles, pure content consumption also played a large role. If you’re stuck at home, you’re more likely to want a device that can help you get through a TV marathon or some couch-based web surfing.

Canalys also noted that tablet gains were modest in part because the market was already so large. About 160.6 million tablets shipped in 2020, or five times the volume of Chromebooks. Google’s platform might be very important for some audiences, but it’s tablets that have the greatest number of eyeballs.

Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga make for a riveting pair in 'Passing'

Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga make for a riveting pair in 'Passing'

Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga make for a riveting pair in 'Passing'

It takes a moment for Passing to reveal itself. At first, the screen is just a white blur, and only gradually do shapes and sound begin to emerge: shoes, voices, a street. Eventually, we're able to place ourselves in 1920s New York, and pinpoint Irene (Tessa Thompson) as our protagonist.

But the disorientation of those first moments never quite fades. Though it's based on a 1929 novella by Nella Larsen, and shot in the elegant black-and-white and boxy 4:3 aspect ratio of classic Hollywood, Passing feels thoroughly modern in its exploration of the blurred lines demarcating race, class, gender, and sexuality. Its old-fashioned aesthetic becomes another a way of pointing out that though things have changed since then, they haven't changed as much as we might want to believe.  Read more...

WhatsApp is using Status stories to make users feel better about their privacy

WhatsApp is apparently using Status messages — the app's take on Stories — to set users' minds at ease.

Users of the Facebook-owned messaging app in the U.S. and UK received reassuring Status notes about WhatsApp's approach to privacy on Saturday, according to a report from The Verge. One of Mashable's sister sites in Asia also spotted similar messages earlier in the week.

The other Mashable (hi all!) noted that WhatsApp's first three Status stories all focused on the company's new privacy policy, which goes into effect on May 15. They're simple, friendly messages that favor big ideas over piles of detail. Read more...

India will propose a law banning private cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin

India will propose a law banning private cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin

India may be the next country to clamp down on existing cryptocurrencies in favor of its own. As TechCrunch reports, India’s lower house of parliament has revealed plans to introduce a law that would ban “all private cryptocurrencies” in the country, including popular ones like Bitcoin. Instead, parliament would establish a “facilitative framework” for creating an official digital money format issued through the Reserve Bank of India.

The proposed law should surface during the current parliament session.

A formal ban would be a long time in coming. India rejected cryptocurrency as legal tender in 2018 and recommended banning existing digital cash with prison sentences up to 10 years for violators. The Reserve Bank argued the currency wasn’t real as it had no physical counterpart and hadn’t been stamped. The country’s Supreme Court sided with objectors and allowed trading in 2020, but that wasn’t expected to have a lasting effect.

It wouldn’t be hard to see why India would want to ban private crypto in favor of a government solution. An official currency would give the country more control that limits foreign influence, but it would also provide the kind of stability associated with conventional money. Prices for Bitcoin and similar currencies still tend to fluctuate wildly, and they’re more prone to manipulation. In theory, India can embrace digital-only currency without some of the pitfalls.

Relive the dramatic Apollo 14 launch and moon landing, 50 years later

On Jan. 31, 1971, NASA  sent the Apollo 14 mission skyward.

The eighth crewed mission in the Apollo program (and third one to reach the surface of the Moon) lifted off on a Sunday afternoon with NASA astronauts Alan Shepard, Stuart Roosa, and Edgar Mitchell on board. They reached the surface of Earth's only natural satellite five days later.

'Fortnite' gets a 'GI Joe' character with a matching action figure

'Fortnite' gets a 'GI Joe' character with a matching action figure

It’s no longer rare to see action figures for video game characters, but an action figure designed to accompany the character is relatively rare — and Epic Games wants to give it a try. The developer has released a Fortnite outfit for GI Joe’s Snake Eyes alongside an upcoming Hasbro action figure based on that skin. You’ll have to spend $40 to pre-order that real-world figure and wait until January 2022 to receive it, but it could be appealing if you like the mysterious ninja enough to want a physical memento.

Snake Eyes will rotate out of Fortnite’s shop at an unspecified point.

The collaboration is a not-so-subtle plug for the Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins movie tentatively premiering in October 2021. It’s far from the first major Fortnite tie-in, of course — you’ll find everything from soccer players to superheroes in the battle royale shooter. However, it’s clear Epic is branching out with launches that extend beyond the game itself. We wouldn’t be surprised to see more like this in the future.

Weird 'SNL' returns with John Krasinski as the father of demon twins

Weird 'SNL' returns with John Krasinski as the father of demon twins

Zoom interviews can be full of awkwardness — and that's when your interrupting kids aren't the antichristSaturday Night Live cast host John Krasinski as a stock market expert and father of two in a Jan. 30 sketch, with Kate McKinnon and Mikey Day as his terrifying twins.

At first, the sketch seems to be about how Redditors shook the stock market with GameStop earlier in the week, but then Krasinski moves his chair to reveal a disturbing piece of wall art. He declares proudly that the piece ("Restless Sinner") was made by his daughter. Moments later, McKinnon and Day show up with matching blonde wigs and deadly stares. They keep popping up in Father's interview until they develop certain enmity with his fellow panelist Dale (Beck Bennett), and even their favorite snack won't distract them. Read more...

John Krasinski singing 'The Office' theme song is the happiest we've been in a year

John Krasinski singing 'The Office' theme song is the happiest we've been in a year

Saturday Night Live tried not go overboard with The Office sketches for host John Krasinski, but the few references that did drop were extremely satisfying.

In one sketch, Krasinski joined SNL cast members in singing invented lyrics to TV theme songs, including The Queen's Gambit, Bridgerton, and The Mandalorian. (Dear SNL: Please stop trying to make Baby Yoda a thing.)

Just when it seemed like the sketch would end without doing the obvious, Krasinski takes the mic, singing along to the entire Office theme song. He starts off simple ("Scranton, Scranton, Scranton, Scranton, Scranton, Scranton) and goes on to narrate actions in the split screen ("Tie flip!"). At least one audience member yells "Yeah!" at the end, and we feel it in our souls. Read more...

John Krasinski passionately kisses Pete Davidson when Pam is an 'SNL' no-show

John Krasinski passionately kisses Pete Davidson when Pam is an 'SNL' no-show

John Krasinski's first-ever opening monologue on Saturday Night Live was haunted by the ghost of The Office.

As Krasinski set out to do his whole opening bit, a meta-bit took shape as SNL cast members stationed in the audience peppered him with questions (really, most of them are statements) about his time on the hit NBC series. And that, of course, led to an insistent demand for a Jim... er, that is John and Pam kiss. Even though Jenna Fischer, the actor who played Pam, was nowhere near the SNL set.

Enter Pete Davidson. When the young SNL player took to the stage to explain why people are still so obsessed with a show that ended eight years ago — "Everyone's been stuck inside for a year watching The Office non-stop," he explained — he immediately became the ideal choice to fill the role of Pam. And so he did. The rest is TV history. Read more...

The MyPillow guy is hilariously incoherent on 'SNL' Weekend Update

Of the many Donald Trump adherents who debased themselves on the national stage, few did it with as much aplomb and enthusiasm than the martial law-espousing MyPillow CEO, Mike Lindell.

No one does Lindell's special breed of absurdity better than Saturday Night Live's Beck Bennett. In this appears on Weekend Update, Bennett-as-Lindell professes his undying love for pillows as he leans in on the same toxic 2020 election rhetoric and lies that turned the real-life MyPillow guy's business into a commercial pariah. Feeling hopeful for the USA? The 'SNL' cold open has a reality check for you.

Feeling hopeful for the USA? The 'SNL' cold open has a reality check for you.

What still works in these United States of America? Not a whole lot, according to Saturday Night Live.

The latest SNL cold open, also the first of 2021, starts things off with a step away from the direct political parody that became a (debatable) gold mine for the show during the Donald Trump era. Instead, the eight-minute sketch delivers a Kate McKinnon-hosted talk show called "What Still Works?"

As each brief segment cycles through some of the most pressing topics on Americans' minds in January 2021 — including the detestable words and views of Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, the "GameStonk" blitz, and the almost-too-late maneuvers by Big Tech to de-fang Trump — to remind us all that actually no, the USA isn't in such great shape at the moment. The internet tricked me into believing I can multitask

When we spend so much of our time online, we’re bound to learn something while clicking and scrolling. Discover something new with Mashable’s series I learned it on the internet.

I've never felt more like a hungry squirrel than when I spoke to a neuroscientist who's spent decades studying, and trying to expand, human attention spans.

Just like a squirrel forages for nuts, he explained, humans forage for information. As a squirrel hops from tree to tree to gather food — even if the tree it's hanging out in has plenty to offer — humans hop from information source to information source. We get bored of our metaphorical nuts, or we get anxious that the other tree's nuts are better, and bouncing over there is a breeze.  Read more...

HBO's 'Street Gang' will make you want to revisit classic 'Sesame Street'

Half a century in, Sesame Street has become one of the most reliable staples of childhood in America. You probably grew up with it; your parents probably did too, and your kids are probably growing up with it now. Which can make it easy to forget how radical the show seemed when it first aired. That, in part, is what Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street is here to fix.

The documentary takes a broad view of the first two decades of the show, digging into the heady days of its creation and introducing the visionaries who made it happen, while also serving up context about the world the show was being born into, and the impact it made on those first generations of viewers. It's a lot for one 107-minute movie to handle, and Street Gang tends to be more interested in offering praise than meaningful insight. But if any show's earned a victory lap, it's probably Sesame Street, and there's plenty of good feeling to be found here.  Read more...

Google pulls Element's Android chat app over content it doesn't control

Google pulls Element's Android chat app over content it doesn't control

Google is once again coming under fire for its less-than-forgiving approach (real or perceived) to federated Android apps. According to Android Police, Google has pulled Element’s federated chat app from the Play Store for allegedly hosting abusive content. However, Element noted that its app is only a client for the Matrix communication network, not a self-contained service — it fights abuse on its own servers, but can’t control what happens elsewhere.

The app left the store without warning, Element said. The developers have sent a “detailed appeal” to Google but hadn’t heard back as of this writing. Users can download a slightly older version of Element from F-Droid in a pinch, and there are plans to make a new repository that always includes the latest app release.

We’ve asked Google for comment.

While the option of sideloading the app softens the blow, this won’t exactly thrill the community. Multiple governments (including the US, UK, France and Germany) use Element and the Matrix network alongside universities and businesses — losing easy access to the app could be a significant hassle.

The move comes as tech giants have become increasingly sensitive to the content in apps they provide or host. Apple and Google both cracked down on Parler following the US Capitol riot, for instance. If Google pulled Element for content that wasn’t on the app maker’s servers, however, that would be problematic — it would effectively ask the team to screen an entire online platform, not just the section it can moderate.
