Apple offers three-month News+ trials through Black Friday weekend

Apple offers three-month News+ trials through Black Friday weekend

Apple Music has long had three-month free trials, but what if you want to give News+ a similar dry run? You can -- but only if you act quickly. Apple is offering a three-month trial to News+ to American and Canadian users who sign up through Black Friday weekend. That's much longer than the usual one month, and should give you a considerably better feel for what it's like to read magazines and newspapers on your Apple devices.

As always, you'll want to keep an eye on when your trial date ends. Apple will automatically renew your News+ service for $10 per month ($13 CAD) if you haven't cancelled before your free period is over.

It's not certain if or when Apple might offer a promo like this again. However, there have been rumors that News+ got off to a slow start. Campaigns like this might help fence-sitters who've been curious and wanted more time to sample Apple's wares. And look at it this way: if nothing else, you'll have plenty of reading material to tide you over during the winter.

Twitter bans House candidate who suggested Ilhan Omar should be hanged

Twitter bans House candidate who suggested Ilhan Omar should be hanged

Twitter may be reluctant to crack down on politicians' tweets, but it still has its limits -- and one political candidate may have crossed the line. The social media giant has permanently banned Republican House candidate Danielle Stella's personal and campaign accounts for "repeated violations" of Twitter's policies. While it didn't elaborate on what those violations were, Stella's campaign suggested that her potential rival, incumbent representative Ilhan Omar, should be "tried for #treason and hanged" if she was found to have passed sensitive info to Iran through Qatar. That claim is unsupported by evidence. The posts may have violated Twitter policies forbidding the promotion of violence or threats.

Stella has denied that she was calling for violence against Omar, claiming instead that she was merely asking for the "enforcement of federal code." Omar has been the frequent target of threats, many of them due to conspiracy theories, and in a response argued that "violent rhetoric" like Stella's "inevitably" leads to threats and attacks.

Twitter declined to elaborate to Engadget beyond saying that Stella had violated rules. However, this could easily be interpreted as a show of force. While the social network has conspicuously avoided bans against sitting politicians with claims that it wants to preserve tweets with cultural importance, banning Stella shows that it doesn't have infinite patience. This might dissuade others from using violent language, at least until they get into office.

EU investigates Google data collection practices

EU investigates Google data collection practices

No, European antitrust regulators still aren't done looking into Google's practices. The European Commission told Reuters in a statement that it's conducting a "preliminary investigation" into Google's data collection. While it didn't go into detail, a leaked document indicated that the focuses were on local search, ads (including ad targeting), sign-in services and web browsers, among "others." It's covering the core of Google's businesses, to put it another way.

We've asked Google for comment. In the past, it explained that it used data to improve its services and gave users controls to manage and delete their info.

An investigation doesn't necessarily guarantee the EU will file an antitrust case. However, officials have previously slapped Google with over €8 billion (about $8.8 billion) in fines over allegations of restrictive ad contracts, anti-competitive Android policies and similar claims. It wouldn't be shocking if the Commission found issues with Google's data gathering methods, especially when national regulators have already fined Google for reported GDPR violations.

The Morning After: Black Friday forever (or at least all weekend)

The Morning After: Black Friday forever (or at least all weekend)

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Welcome to (more of) your weekend! While deal hunters should keep looking here for some of the best offers available this weekend -- yes, the Instant Pot is on sale again -- we'll highlight some interesting stories from the last week and point out our latest laptop review.

The oversized thin-and-light no one asked for.LG Gram 17 review

According to Cherlynn Low, LG's Gram 17 laptop is impressive in a few ways: it's light, the massive screen beautiful and there are plenty of ports. It's lighter than the 16-inch MacBook or Dell's XPS 15, and managed better battery life than Apple's machine in our test. However, lackluster performance and the sheer awkwardness of such a large portable will make smaller, faster laptops a better option for most people.

Soundbars, streaming subscriptions, universal remotes and more. What to buy for your new 4K TV

If you've picked out a brand new 4K set, then congratulations, there's more beautiful HDR footage to experience than ever before. Of course, the journey doesn't end there, and now that you've got your new TV, it's time to think about what you're putting around it.

Try 'Ultimate Werewolf' or 'Stop Thief.'The best board games with an app-based twist

Board games are a timeless way to socialize and bring loved ones together over the holiday season. If you're tired of the classics (please, no more Monopoly), it might be time to freshen up your collection with a hybrid board game. If you're open to the idea and want a few recommendations, check out our Engadget-approved short list.

Comparing resolution, data usage, price, games and more.Stadia vs. xCloud: How these game-streaming services stack up

Now that Stadia and xCloud are playable in the wild, it's time for a good old-fashioned showdown. Considering one service has launched and already disappointed its supporters, and the other is in beta and delivering on its claims, you can probably guess which one comes out looking better here.

The battle will have to wait.Ford will pass on a tug-of-war with Tesla's Cybertruck

After Elon Musk exchanged words with Ford exec Sundeep Madra over an F-150 vs. Cybertruck rematch, a Ford spokesperson told TechCrunch "Sunny's tweet was tongue in cheek to point out the absurdity of Tesla's video, nothing more." While the car company has hybrid and full-electric versions of its truck in the works, for now at least, it's not trying to correct the record against Tesla's prototype truck.

But wait, there's more...

Apple's new 32GB iPad is actually cheaper than it was on Black Friday

TL;DR: Apple's new 32GB iPad usually retails for $329, but today it's on sale for a mere $229.99 on Amazon — that's a bigger discount than its Black Friday pricing.

Let the record show that sales held on Black Friday proper aren't always ground zero for the best holiday deals on new tech. *bangs gavel*

Exhibit A: After selling it for $249 during their official Black Friday sale, the hardworking folks over at Amazon have just dropped the price of the all-new 32GB Apple iPad to only $229.99. (Yep — they were totally holding out on us.) That's better than yesterday's pricing at Walmart, too, so if you thought about buying a new tablet at any point over the past couple of days, consider this a sign from the universe. Read more...

What to know before buying your mom CBD for the holidays

There may only be 12 days of Christmas, but there are approximately 12 million CBD products trying to capture your attention. And most of them you shouldn’t buy.

It’s hard enough to get a handle on what CBD will actually do for you. Picking which product to buy amid the plethora of options — which face little to no regulation — adds an extra layer of difficulty. Then there’s the wrinkle of buying CBD as a gift. Any time you use a CBD product, you’re basically acting as a guinea pig. When you buy CBD for your mom for Christmas, you’re treating her as one, too.

As Martin Lee, the director of CBD advocacy group Project CBD says, "There’s good-quality products, and there’s a lot of crap out there." Read more...

Engadget readers can save on iRobot Roomba i7 vacuums

Engadget readers can save on iRobot Roomba i7 vacuums

If the price of vacuum robots has kept you away from the tech, we may be able to help. We've partnered with Wellbots to provide Engadget readers with an exclusive discount on iRobot's high-end Roomba i7+ and i7 series vacuums.

You can get the i7+ for $699, instead of $999, by using the code "ENGADGETBOT" at checkout, and the i7 for $499, down from $699, with "ENGADGETVAC". Effectively, this promotion allows you to buy the more expensive i7+ at the usual price of the i7. As with our previous Wellbots deal, there's no sales tax if you live outside of New York State.

The two models are almost identical other than the fact the i7+ comes with a charging station that automatically empties the vacuum's dust container into a proprietary disposable bag after each session. Each bag can hold up to 30 loads worth of dust and debris. While certainly an upgrade over the standard i7, you still have to throw out the bags yourself. It does, however, mean the i7+ requires less oversight.

Otherwise, both models include a feature called Imprint Smart Mapping, which allows them to classify and remember all the rooms in your home. In turn, you can take advantage of this feature to instruct the vacuums to clean a specific room using either the iRobot Home app, or Alexa and Google Assistant. Using the same feature, you can create custom cleaning schedule. iRobot also claims the i7 series is a good fit for pet owners thanks to their three-stage cleaning system, which the company says is good at vacuuming up unseen dust and allergens. We gave the i7+ an 87 when we reviewed it last year, declaring it "iRobot's best vacuum robot yet." Our main concerns were the cost of the vacuum itself and the proprietary bags. While we can't with help the latter, $300 off should help with the former.

Walmart's Black Friday pricing on the Roomba robot vacuum is still live

TL;DR: The Alexa-enabled, self-charging iRobot Roomba 670 robot vacuum is on sale for only $197 at Walmart. It's normally $329.99, so you'll save $132.99.

Did you miss Walmart's epic Black Friday deal on the Shark ION R75? Never fear: There's another amazing discount on a WiFi-enabled robot vacuum in town, and it'll save you just as much dough.

Here's the sitch: If you head over to Walmart's website right now, you can still take advantage of its Black Friday pricing on the iRobot Roomba 670. (That's right: You don't even have to brave the holiday weekend crowds for this one.) It typically retails for $329.99, but you'll pay a mere $197 — an impressive savings of $132.99, or 40%. LG Gram 17 review: The oversized thin-and-light no one asked for

LG Gram 17 review: The oversized thin-and-light no one asked for

Apple's MacBook Pro 16-inch may be big, but there's a bigger laptop in town. Okay, so there are plenty of bigger laptops around, but the LG Gram 17 is not only larger, but it's also much lighter. It offers a gorgeous, gigantic 17-inch screen that you can take with you, just in case you need a roomier canvas on the go. LG has proven it can fit a big screen in a small package, but the Gram 17 doesn't pack the performance punch you might expect from a system this size. So the question is, who needs a screen this large in a thin-and-light frame, but not the horsepower that usually goes along with it?

Design

What really stands out about the Gram 17 is its pairing of a giant display and almost impossibly slim profile. Thanks to things like Intel's Project Athena and Ultrabook categories, as well as NVIDIA's Max Q designs, laptops are getting more svelte by the year. But the Gram 17 would be incredibly thin and light, even for a 15-inch laptop. Surrounding the display are bezels that are barely there, and the chassis is largely unadorned, giving it a very sleek look.

At 2.9 pounds, the Gram 17 is lighter than the 4.4-pound Dell XPS 15 or the 4.3-pound MacBook Pro 16. It's even lighter than the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3, which weighs 3.4 pounds. Though, the Apple laptop is a hair slimmer at 0.64 inches compared to the Gram's 0.7, and the XPS 15 also comes in at 0.7 inches. Given the LG laptop's larger surface area, though, it cuts a sharper profile. My favorite of the lot is still the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3, which is the thinnest at 0.57 inches.

The whole reason the Gram 17 is so light, other than to demonstrate LG's ability to engineer such a thing, is to allow people to carry around a huge screen with them without straining their shoulders and arms. If you need a large canvas for making sales presentations, for example, and you don't want to lug an external monitor, this could come in handy. Otherwise, it's hard to imagine any other scenario where you'd pick the Gram 17 over another laptop.

Even though it fit snugly into my largest tote, the Gram 17 was quite unwieldy to carry around. I actually opened it up on the train to get some work done, and found myself poking the passengers beside me because the laptop spilled over the boundaries of my seat. It's definitely a lot easier to carry around than any other 17-inch notebook and I'm more likely to bring it to a meeting than, say, an Alienware or ROG of the same screen size. But I'd always pick a 15-inch system or smaller to take on the go.

LG Gram 17 review

Though the magnesium frame is incredibly light, it does feel a little cheap and fragile compared to the more tank-like build of other 17-inch laptops. Still, LG said the Gram 17 meets military-spec standards for durability. And though I didn't have the guts to toss this thing around too much, it did remain in near-perfect condition even after I stashed it in my giant purse and jostled around sometimes-violent strangers on the New York subway. I also tried to twist the Gram 17 and the machine did give a little, but that teeny bit of flex is something I'm willing to live with as a trade-off for such a light body.

Because there's so much room on the Gram 17, LG was able to cram a generous array of ports. There's three USB 3.0 Type A ports, a USB C slot, an HDMI socket, an Ethernet port, as well as a micro SD card reader and a headphone jack. Though, this thing is so big it almost feels like there's still room for a CD ROM drive, if you remember those.

Display

The Gram 17 offers a reasonable resolution of 2560 x 1600, which translates to a spacious 16:10 aspect ratio. The nice thing about this is that it lets you open up a ton of apps and multitask like a legend. You can quarter up the display and have four apps running at the same time, or you can do what I did, which was open up multiple reference pages for specs and articles, side by side while banging out a review. That real estate is incredibly useful for serious multitasking.

I also like that the display was really bright and colorful. Images from a sample 4K video on YouTube looked straight up gorgeous. Plus, I could place the Gram 17 on the table in a hotel room, and still clearly see characters from my favorite TV shows from the bed about six feet away.

Keyboard and trackpad

Because it has such a sharp profile compared to rival 17-inch systems, the Gram 17 also has far less depth to offer in its keyboard. That isn't to say that the buttons here are quite as shallow as the Macbook Air's, but don't expect the cushy travel you get from most systems this size. There's still some depth here and the snappy feedback makes typing more comfortable.

Since there's plenty of room on the deck itself though, LG saw fit to squeeze in a numpad and as well as a handy power button at the top right corner that also housed a fingerprint sensor for convenient logins. Yet, the company made some curious decisions in the layout. Specifically, the Enter and Backspace keys are smaller than usual. Because of that, these keys require a little more reaching than I'm used to, and instead of hitting Enter, I ended up inserting a lot of quote marks. I also found it hard to reach for the delete key, which sat all the way to the top right of the backspace button.

LG Gram 17 review

The trackpad, on the other hand, benefitted from the extra space. This glass-covered surface is generously sized and I never ran out of room while scrolling through pages or pinching to zoom, and the cursor was consistent and responsive.

Performance and battery life

Oddly, with such a roomy chassis, you'd think that LG would find enough room to squeeze in a more powerful graphics card. But, because the Gram 17 is so thin, there isn't a lot of room for a sophisticated cooling system that needs to accompany those. Instead, it comes with an Intel UHD 620 GPU. Now I'm not the most hardcore gamer or video editor -- my most demanding task was running the occasional game of Overcooked, so this held up for most of my workloads. Those expecting more beef will likely be disappointed.

PCMark 10 Geekbench 5 (Compute) ATTO (top reads/writes)
LG Gram 17 (Intel Core i7-8565U, UHD 620) 3,174 4,676 504.43 MB/s / 442.47 MB/s
Surface Laptop 3 15-inch (Ryzen 7 3780U Surface Edition, Radeon Vega RX11) 4,124 12,414 1.9 GB/s / 801 MB/s
Dell XPS 15 (2019, Intel i9-9980 HK, NVIDIA GTX 1660) 5,193 5,517 2.05 GB/s / 1.10 GB/s

The laptop's CPU is an eighth-generation quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, and it performed decently for the most part. It had no problem with my usual workload, which includes multiple browser tabs while sneaking in a few episodes of The Good Place on Netflix in the background. But the computer did stutter when I tried to jump between folders while unzipping three folders at the same time. Though, that's more a product of the slow SSD than the CPU -- on our disk speed benchmark, the Gram 17 was only about half as fast as the competition.

It's not an apples to apples comparison, but consider a recent notebook of a similar size like the Macbook Pro 16. It packs a six- or eight-core i7 or i9 chipset with AMD's Radeon Pro graphics options, so you'll have plenty more power for demanding tasks. Other 17-inch laptops tend to be gaming laptops and are often complete tanks like the Alienware Area 51m, and pack much more muscle into heftier frames. At $1,700, the Gram 17 also costs about a thousand bucks less than these two laptops. It's also a completely different kind of machine. You're better off thinking of it as a thin-and-light mainstream laptop with a big screen than a large notebook packing powerful guts in a thin-and-light frame. It's almost like a bigger Surface Laptop 3, which starts at $999 and uses AMD Ryzen processors.

Battery life
LG Gram 17 12:55
Surface Laptop 3 (15-inch) 7:50
Dell XPS 15 (2019) 13:29
Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch 11:20

Since most 17-inch laptops tend to just sit on your desktop, battery life usually isn't a priority for these machines. Yet, the Gram 17 managed to clock almost 13 hours on our battery test. That's about an hour longer than the Macbook Pro 16, but a half hour shorter than the XPS 15. The Alienware Area 51m meanwhile lasted a hilarious 1.5 hours.

Wrap-up

I'm truly impressed by what LG was able to do with the Gram series, even as I struggle to understand why someone would need to lug around such a large screen. The best uses for big displays are demanding tasks like video or graphics editing, and those processes require more muscle than the Gram 17 offers. Ultimately, the Gram 17 seems more like a way to show what laptop makers could do if all they cared about was shaving off inches and pounds.

Does your kid think your smart speaker is just another family member?

Does your kid think your smart speaker is just another family member?

Does your kid think your smart speaker is just another family member?

Mary Beth Foster has three Google Home units throughout her Mint Hill, N.C., home, and her two-year-old often talks with them, walking up to them as if they are another person.

Recently, while her husband took a shower, her son had an entire conversation with the device. “He asked it to play music, and it did,” she said. “And he asked what the weather was. I guess he heard us do that. It told him it was cloudy. And then he asked, ‘What’s a cloudy day?’ And it defined it for him.”

Foster chalks up these discussions as a funny fact of modern life. His first words were “OK Google,” after all.

But these kinds of interactions also are fueling new research and questions about the relationships kids are forging with the robots and voice-activated assistants in our homes. According to a March report released by Common Sense, four in 10 parents of kids ages 2 to 8 say their families have a smart speaker. Of those, 32% say their kids talk to their smart speakers a few times a day — 6% say a few times an hour or more.  Read more...

Walmart's Black Friday sale is still going: Day 2 deals are right here

Black Friday may be "over," but is it really? If you ask us, it's simply Day 2. (Or Day 30, if you've been tracking deals all month like like we have.)

In the wee hours of Friday morning, Walmart's Black Friday sale officially began — and a lot of its online deals are going ridiculously fast.

How fast, you might ask? Well, let's put it this way: One Mashable shopping writer attempted to order a pair of $129 AirPods for her mom on Walmart.com around 1 a.m. — as in, an hour after the retailer's Black Friday sale started — and they were already out of stock at that point. It's brutal out there, y'all. We've tried to cross out the deals that are no longer live wherever we can, but Walmart has a history of bringing things back, so we aren't removing them completely. Save $100 on the Sonos Play:5 on Cyber Monday

Save $100 on the Sonos Play:5 on Cyber Monday

In addition to Black Friday discounts on home theater speakers, Sonos is offering Cyber Monday deals that music lovers will appreciate.

On December 2nd, the Sonos One will be on sale for $50 off ($149). When the One speaker first came out we called it the best-sounding smart speaker you could buy and gave it a score of 90. It has excellent audio quality, works with just about every music streaming service and it has built-in Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple AirPlay 2.

The One SL speaker will be marked down $40 ($129). If you don't want a voice assistant on your Sonos speaker, this might be the device for you. It's nearly identical to the One, but it's microphone-free.

You'll also find the Play:5 on sale at a $100 discount ($399). The Play:5 notched a score of 89 when it made its debut in 2015, and it claims to have the most powerful, high-fidelity sound of any Sonos speaker. It's easy to turn into a multi-room system with other, cheaper Sonos speakers, and while you'll pay more for the quality here, the $100 savings might make that more appealing.

These deals will only be valid on Cyber Monday, which happens to be the last day for the home theater discounts that Sonos is also running.

'Project Cars' developer bought by racing sim giant Codemasters

'Project Cars' developer bought by racing sim giant Codemasters

There's mixed feelings for racing game fans this week as publisher Codemasters announced it will purchase Slightly Mad Studios, the developer of the Project Cars series. Codemasters will pay $30 million for the acquisition, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz.

Slightly Mad Studios is a British developer which worked on titles like Need for Speed: Shift and Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends before debuting the first Project Cars in 2015. The franchise had a second entry with Project Cars 2 in 2017, and a Project Cars 3 has been announced along with a mobile title, Project Cars Go, although neither has a release date yet.

The publisher that purchased the studio, Codemasters, is also a British outfit. The matchup makes sense given Codemasters' focus on racing titles, with its portfolio including titles like the Colin McRae Rally series, the F1 series, the Micro Machines series and the Dizzy series. Though some fans have expressed concerns that the highly realistic simulation of the Project Cars games may be watered down to a more arcade style as seen in other Codemasters games like Grid.

The entire Slightly Mad staff of 150 will transition over to Codemasters in the deal. However, one open question remains: The fate of the "Mad Box," an ambitious Slightly Mad program to build its own console. The plan to build "the most powerful console ever" was announced by CEO Ian Bell in January this year.

For now, the combined Codemasters and Slightly Mad forces will continue work on Project Cars 3, Project Cars Go and an as-yet-unnamed project which is rumored to be a tie-in to the Fast and Furious franchise.

Fujifilm X-T3 camera update adds advanced gimbal controls

Fujifilm X-T3 camera update adds advanced gimbal controls

Fujifilm's X-T3 is shockingly good at video while also being a pretty lightweight mirrorless camera, so it makes a lot of sense to stick it on a gimbal. Thanks to an upcoming firmware update, it's going to be a lot more practical to do that, Fujifilm announced. It's been working with popular gimbal makers DJI, Shenzhen Gudsen and Zhiyung to give you very granular control over the X-T3 using the Ronin S, Crane 2 and other products.

Until now, all you could really do with the X-T3 when it was connected to gimbals via a USB-C cable was snap photos. Now, you'll be able to start and stop video recording, obviously a key function for video shooters. On top of that, you can use the focus control knob on the Crane 2, Ronin S/SC and other gimbals to manually control focus on electronic lenses. Finally, you'll gain control of exposure settings like shutter speed, ISO, aperture and exposure compensation.

The updates apply mostly to gimbals, but will also help on certain DJI drones, too. Along with the gimbal controls, the firmware update will also improve Fujifilm's eye AF tracking, face-detection performance and autofocus in certain complex conditions. It will arrive starting in mid-December, Fujifilm said.
