Sony’s first 5G smartphone is the Xperia 1 II

Sony's big MWC shindig may have been cancelled over virus fears, but the company still has a bunch of new phones to show off. The first, and most notable, is the Xperia 1 II -- dubbed the Xperia 1 Mark II -- which made its debut on the company's not-MWC livestream today. The new flagship is packing a 21:9 6.5-inch 4K OLED HDR display, Dolby Atmos and, most importantly, a 5G modem.

Sony's pedigree is in making TVs, cameras and speakers, and so you'll not be surprised that that's where most of the emphasis was placed. The Mark II's imaging, for instance, cribs plenty of features from Sony's mirrorless cameras to give it the edge for photographers. That includes intelligent eye tracking, as well as smart animal eye tracking, and its 20 frames-per-second autofocus tracking burst.

Hardware-wise, the triple-camera setup holds a trio of 12-megapixel Zeiss-branded lenses, each one enrobed with Zeiss' T* anti-reflective coating. There's a 24mm, f/1.7 lens an 82-degree field of view, a 70mm f/2.4 lens with a 34-degree field of view, and a 16mm f/2.2 lens with a 124-degree field of view. There's also a fourth sensor on the back of the phone, a 3D time-of-flight unit for enhanced zoom, while up front, there's an 8-megapixel f/2.0 selfie lens with an 84-degree field of view.

In terms of the display, the 21:9 CinemaWide 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED screen offers "unprecedented color accuracy" and a creator mode powered by CineAlta, Sony's pro-camera division. The device offers Dolby Atmos sound as well as a pair of front stereo speakers to ensure you can watch movies on the go. Sony hasn't said what the refresh rate of the display is, but did mention that its motion blur technology is "equivalent to that of a 90Hz display."

Music-wise, the Mark II has been optimized by Sony's audio engineers to make audio sound great on headphones with its 360-spatial audio, with a specific focus on Tidal. That, combined with the 3.5mm headphone jack, could put it in the same rough space as some of LG's audiophile handsets that still carry the standard.

Of course, what's inside counts just as much, and inside the Mark II is packing Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 5G system-on-chip. That's been paired with a 4,000mAh battery that, according to Sony, has been designed to last longer thanks to new and improved battery care algorithms. Unfortunately, the company hasn't yet rolled out a full spec list,

It will begin shipping in Spring in one of three colors: White, Black or Purple, and -- contrary to rumors -- will work on Verizon, as well as AT&T, T-Mobile, Cricket and MetroPCS.
